Science buffs! Saturday is Western’s annual Science Rendezvous 2023

On Saturday, the Alumni Stadium at Western University will be taken over by all things scientific as the university hosts its sixth Science Rendezvous.

The free event is organized by university students and faculty and features over 40 interactive activities, stage performances, demonstrations, and pyrotechnics.

Carly Charron, chair of the communications committee for Science Rendezvous and a PhD candidate in biology at Western, described it as “basically just a big festival where we have a bunch of different activities based in different areas of STEAM, so science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.”

It’s a day for children to come out and discover new things, investigate and learn, and participate in all these activities.

Space Goo, Discovering DNA, Tornadoes and Drive, Gummy Bear Slingshot, and Liquid Fireworks are a few of these activities. There are over 400 volunteers involved in this event.

Katie Miller, the executive director of Science Rendezvous, explained, “The goal is to bring science out of the labs and onto the street while having as much fun as possible.”

All of our collaborators work extremely hard throughout the year to come up with the most innovative ways to demonstrate their daily work.

Science Rendezvous has been operating in over 30 Canadian communities for the past 16 years.

Saturday’s event at Western runs from 2 to 9 p.m. and concludes with a pyrotechnics display. Additionally, special diffraction spectacles will be available for viewing the chemistry behind the pyrotechnics.

“We’ve all worked very hard to make this year’s event even better than last year’s, and it’s so heartwarming to see the children enjoying themselves while learning and discovering new things,” said Charon.

Stargazers are also welcome to visit the Cronyn Observatory between 8:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. to observe the night sky.

From 3 to 8 p.m., there will be six food carts offering appetizers, hot cuisine, and dessert.

Free parking is available at the Huron Flatts parking lot for Alumni Stadium.
